Is Chanel Trying to be Hermes?
Well it appears that way after Chanel’s latest show in Paris this week, which featured an equestrian rider on a horse coming out to begin the show…..ummmmm isn’t that your competitors aesthetic?? Yes it is. Hermes is known for their equestrian upbringing and foundation as the brand was built around saddle making and bags for horses - not even people until the 1900’s. YES, Hermes has been around decades longer than Chanel and there really is not comparison. So why is Chanel trying to get into the Hermes orange box? Money.
Chanel started increasing their prices earlier in 2021 however then continued increasing their prices almost every quarter. Since those price increases occurred, a classic Chanel flap leather (not hand made) bag is now $100 USA less than an Hermes Birkin bag, which is hand made from scratch. We do not see the logic behind these prices as the quality is NOT the same and every collector plus fashionista knows that. We are trying to find out what demographic they are trying to consume when you hit those level in prices, you have to have that level of quality for those customers.
We are going to watch and see what continues and if there will be a response from Hermes, maybe they will increase the price of their bags now as well to not be in competition with Chanel? Will Chanel try to get Jean Paul Gaultier to come assist with their collections or do a collaboration? Diet Prada has been watching this as well and we are on the same page with them.
